Surely you’ve been living under the modern equivalent of a rock – i.e. without internet – if the next sentence makes no sense to you. YouTube sweetheart Kina Grannis is coming to Taiwan to perform her first ever concert in Taipei on Friday September 18. Grannis is American guitarist and singer-songwriter. With more than one million subscribers and 150 million views, she is one of YouTube’s most popular personalities. She is half Japanese and half European American. YouTubers Imaginary Future (Grannis’ husband) and Gentle Bones from Singapore will make guest appearances. The concert is part of the Grannis’ Elements tour, named after her second studio album of the same name.
In preparation for her concert, let’s take a look back at some of the YouTube sensation’s best videos:
Grannis shot to mainstream fame with her single “Valentine” from her third album, Stairwells, released in 2010. The single was played on BBC Radio 2, and the cute video was directed by viral video director Ross Ching has since been viewed almost 19 million times on YouTube.
It may be hard to believe, but this adorably creative video is completely real and not green-screened. Using a total of 288,000 jellybeans to create 2,460 frames, the entire undertaking took 1,357 hours to complete. It has received well over 10 million views since then, accumulating more than one million in the first three days. Grannis made an appearance on The Ellen Show to discuss the video and perform the song. Grannis also documented the fascinating, almost two-year process in a behind-the-scenes video, explaining how each frame was made, shot and animated, as well as the crazy process of making a life-size plaster mould of herself.
Before they graduated onto making movies, Wong Fu Productions shot YouTube videos, lots of them. “The Last” is one of their most famous shorts, starring Grannis and Harry Shum Jr. from the TV show Glee. It’s a romantic yet bittersweet piece – Wong Fu at its finest. Grannis also makes an appearance in the Wong Fu series Funemployed.
She’s covered everything from Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” to The Neighbourhood’s “Sweater Weather”, but Grannis’ cover of Lorde’s “Royals” is a true stand out amongst her many cover videos. Working with fellow YouTuber Fresh Big Mouf – who makes beats out of the only sounds he finds at a location – the video was shot in a subway station, with Fresh Big Mouf alternatively tapping and slapping on metal doors to recreate the background music. The two also collaborated in her cover of Pharrell’s “Happy”, using ‘natural’ sound from Los Angeles’ Santa Monica beach.
Expect to hear this upbeat, soulful, ‘sonically organic’ track from Grannis’ latest and sophomore studio album Elements at her Taipei concert. On its release day, Elements hit #2 on the iTunes Singer Songwriter Chart and #1 on iTunes Canada. Also be sure to give “The Fire” and “My Own” a watch/listen, the former is her first single from Elements, and the latter features appearances and the harmonizing vocals of Kina’s sisters Misa and Emi.
And finally, a bonus video just for fun – Phil Wang from Wong Fu teaching Grannis how to say a few phrases in Mandarin in preparation for her Taipei concert, and it’s all kinds of adorable. Kina, we’re so glad we’ll see you soon too!
