Taipei: Xinyi

As the center for all things glamorous in Taipei, Xinyi District is famous for its luxury and sophistication. Taipei 101, the towering architectural icon of Taipei, overlooks broad avenues lined with designer brands and high-end department stores showcasing the latest offerings from Armani and Tiffany’s. Sparkling baubles are traded in for sparkling champagne at night, when the city’s largest clubs open their doors for hordes of party-goers. In spite of the urban glitz, pockets of peaceful Taipei still manage to thrive in Xinyi. The traditional Four Four South Village sits under the shadow of Taipei 101, while Elephant Mountain, just one metro stop away, offers one of the most visually stimulating hiking trails available in the city. They offer a bit of welcome rest in a neighborhood that glitters from day to night.

Luxury Goods Shopping

Shopping for luxury goods is made effortless in Xinyi’s commercial area, which is dominated by Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Life Place. Divided into four stores linked by sky bridges, the complex features perennial favorites like Bottega Veneta and Prada, as well as more niche brands. To the northeast, the palatial Bellavita, with walls made of Brazilian goldstone and a glass dome for a ceiling, houses exclusive brands like Hermès and Van Cleef & Arpels, as well as gourmet dining like l’Atelier de Joël Robuchon and Ton 28. Right across the corner from Taipei 101 is the Eslite flagship, the largest classical bookstore in Taiwan; spanning six levels, the store sells not only books but also home furnishings and clothing by trendy designers.

Hiking on Xiangshan

Nature and exercise are no doubt excellent reasons to go on a hiking trip, but what makes Xiangshan one of a kind is the spectacular view of the Taipei skyline it offers from the observation deck. Photographers flock in early to compete for the best shooting spots, while couples come up at night for a romantic getaway. The best time to visit is just before the end of the day, when the rosy glow of sunset gives way to a symphony of neon lights against an inky black sky.
