Whodunnit?! Solve Mysteries at the Murder Ink Bookstore

This post is written by Hannah Smith.

Despite its bone-chilling name, Murder Ink is an intriguing and relaxing place where you can get a cup of coffee and transport yourself into the middle of an old spy novel. Located in Dadaocheng, an area known more for its historical streets than for tales of intrigue, this bookstore/café is seemingly inconspicuous on the busy city street. Yet, Murder Ink should be anything but modest, because it is the first bookstore in Taiwan to carry only mystery/detective novels.

Most books in Murder Ink are in Chinese, but there are also novels from Japan and Britain. This is the place to go if you are a mystery fanatic looking for something new, or you just want to soak up the feeling of being in an old mystery movie. The first floor of the bookstore is a classy café, where patrons sip on lattes and nibble on sandwiches, but upstairs, where the books are located, permeates a definite Sherlock vibe. This could be because of the comfy armchairs, the vintage typewriter, the portrait of Sherlock himself, or all the other various memorabilia crowding the walls and shelves. You can even use the specially made Murder Ink stamp in your book.

The bookstore’s collection consists of classic British detective stories such as The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Aurthur Conan Doyle and The Mirror Crack’d by Agatha Christie, as well as newer nail-biters including A Drop of the Hard Stuff by Lawrence Block. This American mystery focuses on a sober detective who has to search an Alcoholics Anonymous group for a murderer; A novel where drinking literally kills.

If you don’t have the time to get yourself over to Dadaocheng, you can also browse their selection and purchase books online. According to their website, Murder Ink is on the lookout for volunteers to help in the bookstore, so email them if you feel like playing detective for the day.
