The Taipei543 team recently had the pleasure of meeting with Miss Ko at the KAO!INC. office in MingSheng Community in Taipei. Ko, the winner of the “Best New Artist” at the 2013Golden Melody Awards (the Grammys of Taiwan), is more than just new blood in the music industry. She is the very first female rapper in Taiwan. She aspires to bring something different to the industry and eventually become an influential figure like Oprah and give the younger generation in Taiwan the confidence to follow their dreams.

All About Ko- “I owe it to myself to do what’s best for me.”
543: What was your childhood like?
Ko: I grew up with Hispanic babysitters. They used to listen to Hip-Hop and host parties. I would jump on the couch or dance along to the music. Outside of my building, there would be people break-dancing on the street and a lot of grafitti everywhere. New York City in the 90’s was filled with crime, and much more dangerous than what it is now, so growing up in Queens was also hectic at times. Music was my outlet.
543: How do you balance between chasing your dreams and meeting parents’ expectations?
Ko: I don’t feel like meeting my parents’ expectations anymore. I think I owe it to myself to do what’s the best for me, as long as I am not killing people, selling drugs, or hurting people, and I can make a living without relying on anyone else. That’s what I am doing right now. In the end, I hope my parents can accept all that I have accomplished and be proud of me.
543: What’s your relationship with your father now?
Ko: I transferred to a music school in college without telling my father and even graduated as the valedictorian, but he still wasn’t satisfied. From then on, I realized that I would never do anything to please anyone else; I would do it all for me. I can be the best at something and still not get the approval I hope for. I tried to please my father, but seeing him react the way he did made me not want to please anyone after that.
I haven’t talked to him since I left graduate school last year. He might be extremely dissappointed if he finds out, but I hope that one day he could see what truly makes me happy and be happy for me.
543: Can you tell us about the concept of the album?
Ko: This album was more like a trial, using what limited Chinese I knew at the time and mixing it with different musical genres. We mainly fused Hip-Hop and Jazz, but also some House, EDM, R&B, Soul, and Swing. It’s a collective album in my opinion, filled with old school Hip-Hop, my favorite style of music.
543: Why do you want to be the Teresa Deng in rap industry?
Ko: Her music is so widely accepted by both older and younger generation. I know her through my parents. She is my father’s idol and the only artist my father appreciates. I want to be like her with my music.
543: What’s the message you would like to deliver through this album?
Ko: You can do whatever you want to do as long as you put your mind to it. Don’t let other people tell you what you can’t or can do. There are many stereotypes in this society, but at the end of the day, only you know what’s best for you. You have to follow your heart and work hard.
543: If you didn’t become an artist, what would have your career been?
Ko: A detective. I took a police exam and scored pretty well. I just hope to use what I know I am good at to possibly help others. I am good at piecing together and predicting different things, and applying logic to it. I also love watching CSI. That’s why I wanted to enter into law, but after interning at law firm, I figured it wasn’t for me. I did everything I thought I was interested in,and realized while doing it that it wasn’t really for me, so I moved on.
543: Any advice for aspiring artists?
Ko: Yes. Find your niche. Find people to grow with. Work hard. Don’t give up. Always strive to be better.
543: What are your future plans or goals?
Ko: I want to be the Oprah of Taiwan, and inspire the younger generation to have confidence in themselves, and believe that they can do anything they set their mind to. I also want to help other people improve their music, just like how Softlipa helped me with mine.
Ko & Taiwan- “It’s now a place where I call home. I love Taiwan for Taiwan.”
543: Why did you come to Taiwan?
Ko: I came to Taiwan with the purpose of learning Chinese and finding my roots, hoping that it would help me communicate with and understand my parents better, even teach something to my future children.
543: What does Taiwan mean to you?
Ko: At first, Taiwan was just a place for adventure, because it’s a complete turnaround from NYC. It’s now a place where I call home. I love Taiwan for Taiwan.
543: Who do you want to work with?
Ko: Khalil Fong & A-Mei, especially it would awesome if she can rap with me.
543: What’s your favorite restaurant in Taipei?
543: What do you like to do in Taipei?
Ko: I like walking around in the park and feed the squirrels nachos. The squirrels in Taiwan are more “outgoing”.
543: What are the 3 things that made you go WTF when you first moved to Taiwan?
Ko: 1) Crazy scooters, with 3-5 people riding on one scooter, carrying big-screen TVs and dogs 2) Food vendors hiding from cops 3) Garbage trucks that play music…I thought they were the Taiwanese versions of ice-cream trucks.
